ChatGPT Ads Reach South Africa Before Local Advertisers: Your Thursday Brief

Your customers can already see ChatGPT adverts. You cannot buy one. OpenAI switched advertising on for South African users this week, and its Ads Manager has not opened to local businesses yet. The inventory in front of your market belongs to somebody else.

Paid media and AI

ChatGPT adverts are already running in South Africa

OpenAI extended advertising on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans to 26 more countries this week, South Africa among them. That brings the total to 89 countries, with more than 100,000 advertisers having used the platform since the first American test in February. Adverts carry a sponsored label and sit apart from the answer. Paid tiers above Go stay free of them. Here is the local catch. Ads Manager is not available to South African businesses, so the adverts your customers see come from companies elsewhere.

Why this matters for your business: Competitors outside the country can reach your buyers through a channel you cannot buy into, and no ad report will show it. Watch your branded search and direct traffic instead. Then prepare. Write the comparison and pricing pages a conversational assistant would quote from, and fix your tracking so you can tell AI referrals from direct visits. When Ads Manager opens here you want a running start.

Smarter Ecommerce also published figures on 22 October on what Google’s 17 August bidding change did to campaigns that run out of budget. Around 55 percent of them used to beat their ROAS target by a median of roughly 20 percent. That surplus fell to 11 percent in the week of 17 August, to 6 percent the week after, and to nothing by 31 August. Reset your targets.

Search and SEO

Three studies say AI visibility is not paying for itself

Marie Haynes went through twelve months of analytics from 100 websites covering more than 145 million sessions. ChatGPT sent 0.62 percent of the volume that Google organic did. Those visitors converted far better, at 13.8 percent against 3.02 percent. Even so, Google produced 96.5 percent of every conversion she measured, and 27 times more than all AI tools combined. SEO Works found organic search delivered 39 times more traffic than AI assistants. Kevin Indig studied 12 sites and found no reliable link between AI visibility and branded search or direct traffic.

Why this matters for your business: The quality of AI traffic is real and the quantity is not. Stop paying for AI visibility as though it were a channel and treat it as a side effect of good search work. If somebody is selling you an AEO or GEO retainer, ask them to show conversions rather than citation counts.

A critical PHP flaw reaches most of the web

PHP shipped emergency patches on 21 October for two critical vulnerabilities now called PHP2Shell. Both let an attacker run code on your server with no login and no action from anyone, and one leaks memory. Every version from 5.4 through 8.5.11 is affected, which reaches roughly 70 percent of the world’s websites. The fixed releases are 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35. Google’s John Mueller added advice for anyone taking a site down to patch it, which is to return an HTTP 503 status rather than letting requests time out or answer with 404 or 500 errors.

Why this matters for your business: Ask your host today which PHP version runs your site and whether it is patched. Most hosts manage this with no downtime. If yours cannot answer, that is the problem. WordPress sites are exposed through the server rather than through WordPress, so no plugin update fixes it for you.

Social media

Most people posting video now use AI on it

YouTube published research by NRG on 21 October covering nearly 700 American respondents aged 14 to 44 who had posted a video in the previous year. Of those, 72 percent already use AI on their videos or images, and 61 percent want to insert themselves into content built by AI, the most popular use in the group. YouTube frames this as a trend piece rather than a measurement of the whole platform.

Why this matters for your business: The bar for looking polished has dropped, so polish no longer sets you apart. Being a real person saying something specific about your own trade still does. Film on a phone, say one useful thing, and let your face and your premises do the work no tool can fake.

Content marketing

AI Overviews now cover 88 percent of commercial searches

Semrush tracked 400 American commercial keywords across banking, software and ecommerce every month from September 2025 to August 2026. AI Overview coverage climbed from 45.75 percent to 88 percent. Weighted by search volume it reaches 97 percent, so the keywords without an AI Overview account for under 3 percent of real demand. This is desktop data from the United States and it measures coverage only, with no click figures attached.

Why this matters for your business: This is the other half of the story above. AI answers barely send traffic, yet they now sit on top of almost every commercial search you care about. So the work is not chasing referrals. It is making sure that when Google summarises your category, your pricing page, your comparison page and your reviews are what it reads.

Automotive

Most younger car buyers now ask an AI first

Bain surveyed more than 12,000 car buyers across 11 markets and published on 21 October. South Africa is not one of those markets, so read the direction rather than the exact figures. More than 60 percent of younger buyers worldwide now use AI when choosing their next car. Younger buyers reach 61 percent in Europe and 55 percent in the United States, more than double the older buyers in both. More than six in ten buyers start online and nine in ten still finish in person. Buyers who have test driven a battery car are up to 2.2 times more willing to consider one.

Why this matters for your dealership: The research now happens where you cannot see it and the sale still happens on your floor. So your job is to be findable and quotable before the first phone call. Put real specifications, pricing and availability on every vehicle page as plain text rather than inside an image or a feed widget. Then make the test drive easy to book from that page, because a drive more than doubles willingness to buy.

What to do this week

  • Ask your host which PHP version runs your site and whether PHP2Shell is patched. Do this one first.
  • Reset the targets on any Google Ads campaign that runs out of budget before the day ends.
  • Open your ChatGPT Ads settings before 30 October if you advertise there, because automatic creative rewrites switch on by default that day.
  • Update your pricing and comparison pages. They are what Google reads when it writes an AI Overview about your category.
  • Check any Meta Graph API work on your site against the 27 October deadline, when the version 26 restrictions reach all supported versions.
