You will not see the version of your advert that actually runs. OpenAI told advertisers on Monday that from 30 October it can rewrite your headline, resize your image, translate your words and send the click to a different page on your site. The setting is already switched on.
Paid media and AI
OpenAI will rewrite your adverts for you
OpenAI emailed ChatGPT Ads advertisers on 20 October to say that creative enhancements are now on by default. From 30 October the change applies to new and existing self service campaigns. The system can write fresh headlines to match the conversation a person is having, resize your images, translate your ad text, and swap your destination URL for a page it judges more relevant. It builds those variations from your existing ad and your own landing pages. Your ads can run in versions you never saw.
Why this matters for your business: The destination URL is the part to worry about. If OpenAI sends a click to a different page, your conversion tracking, your landing page tests and your sales message all move without you. Open your ad account settings before 30 October and make the choice deliberately. One PPC specialist has already paused her ChatGPT Ads test over poor lead quality, so this is not a channel to leave running on its own.
The same date carries another change. Google starts allowing personalised advertising for alcohol on YouTube inventory on 30 October. Only Egypt, India, Indonesia and Poland sit outside the update, so South Africa is included where local law permits it. Targeting on health information related to alcohol stays banned.
Search and SEO
Google wants to see your identity document
Google is testing a new way to verify a Business Profile. Alongside phone, email, video call and postcard, some owners now see an option to upload a photo of a government ID under a heading that reads Submit an Identity Verification. The screen says the document is used only for verification and will not be shown publicly. A local search specialist posting as Digital Jedi saw it about two weeks ago and asked the obvious question, which is how Google knows the ID belongs to the business. The option is not in Google’s help documentation and Google has not commented.
Why this matters for your business: Treat this as a test, but prepare for it. If you manage listings for clients you need a position on whether you will handle their identity documents at all. Under POPIA a copy of an ID document is a record you have to justify holding, secure properly and delete when you are finished. The cleanest answer is that the client uploads it themselves while you watch the screen.
Social media
YouTube will freeze your channel if it suspects a hijack
YouTube said on 21 October that it now pauses channel features automatically when it detects possible account hijacking. Five things stop working for everyone on the channel, the owner included. You cannot upload or edit videos and Shorts, make a private video public, start a live stream, create a playlist, or upload a thumbnail. YouTube says the review usually finishes within 24 hours but sets no maximum. Its help article says recent videos may be set to private during the review while its community post says existing videos stay public. Those two statements do not agree.
Why this matters for your business: If YouTube carries part of a launch, build a spare day into the schedule. There is no published appeal route and no false positive rate, so a wrongly flagged channel simply waits. Tighten the basics instead. Put two-step verification on every Google account with channel access, use a recovery email someone actually reads, and keep a written list of who holds manager rights.
Content marketing
A site deleted a third of its pages and kept its rankings
Anna Crowe published a content pruning case study on 19 October covering a small B2B healthcare site. She removed 198 of 600 crawled URLs, a third of the site. Those pages had earned 144 clicks between them, 3.1 percent of the total, and 140 had never earned a single click. Search Console clicks then rose 37 percent and organic sessions rose 55 percent. Crowe is honest that paid search was switched off in the same window, so she cannot prove the pruning caused the growth.
Why this matters for your business: The part worth copying is the audit, not the deleting. Pull a full URL list, join it to your Search Console clicks, and you will find a long tail of pages that have never earned anything. Redirect them somewhere genuinely relevant before you noindex, because Crowe’s biggest regret was sending valuable pages to generic hubs. One had collected 85,200 impressions. Leave alone anything that still earns.
On privacy, Berlin’s data protection authority reprimanded four German political parties for targeting Facebook users on inferred political interests. No fines were issued, but the reasoning travels. The authority held the advertiser responsible rather than only the platform, and found no lawful basis for the targeting. The same logic reaches health, religion and sexual orientation, all special personal information under POPIA.
Automotive
Dealers who run on their data hit profit targets twice as often
Cox Automotive published its 2026 Dealer Success Study on 20 October. It surveyed 500 franchise dealership respondents in the first quarter of this year, weighted by dealership size. Only 22 percent strongly agree their decisions are primarily data driven. That group meets its profitability goals at 36 percent against 19 percent for everyone else, a seventeen point gap that is widest in fixed operations. The supporting numbers are about habits rather than software. In that group 76 percent say staff fully trust the data in their systems against 52 percent elsewhere, and 73 percent set a measure of success before rollout against 55 percent.
Why this matters for your dealership: This is not a software gap. It comes from habits you can start this month without buying anything. Agree one source of truth for lead volume so your website, your CRM and your ad platforms stop reporting three different numbers. Write down what success looks like before you switch the next tool on. And fix the data your staff already distrust, because a sales manager who does not believe the lead report goes back to guessing. The study is self reported and shows association rather than cause.
What to do this week
- Open your ChatGPT Ads account settings and decide on creative enhancements before 30 October, paying attention to the destination URL permission
- Check whether any of your YouTube advertising touches alcohol, because that change also lands on 30 October and South Africa is not excluded
- Turn on two-step verification for every Google account with YouTube channel access and confirm the recovery email still works
- Agree a POPIA safe process for client identity documents now, before Google asks one of them for a photo
- Export your full URL list against Search Console clicks and find the pages that have never earned a visit
If you want help with any of this on your site or your dealer group, get in touch.
