Wednesday Brief: Google Is Running a Spam Update Right Now

Thin orange shield outline on dark green, marking the Google August 2026 spam update

Google switched on a spam update at 27 minutes past nine on Monday morning, Pacific time. It runs globally, in every language, and Google says it will take a few days to finish. If your rankings move this week, that is almost certainly why.

It leads a genuinely busy Wednesday. WordPress 7.1 ships today, Instagram will finally let you fix the audio on a post that is already live, and a Merchant Center change on Monday quietly rewrites six weeks of dealer reporting.

Search and SEO

Google released the August 2026 spam update on Monday

Google Search Central announced it on Monday 18 August and logged it on the Search Status Dashboard as an incident affecting ranking, timestamped 9.27am Pacific. The update applies worldwide and to every language. Google expects the rollout to take a few days.

This is the third spam update of 2026, after March and June. Google published no new spam policies alongside it, so the existing ones are simply being enforced harder. Thin pages, doorway clusters and bought links are the usual casualties.

Why this matters for your business: you finally have a named cause for movement this week. Pull your Search Console data from 18 August onward and compare it against the fortnight before. If you have dropped, do not start rewriting everything at once. Google’s own documentation says recovery from a spam update takes months, because its automated systems need to watch your site comply over time. Read the spam policies properly, fix what actually breaches them, then wait. The sites that gain ground in a spam update are usually the ones that never did anything clever in the first place.

Instagram will now let you swap the audio on a live post

Instagram added a Replace Audio tool for published feed posts and carousels. Until now a wrong or badly licensed track meant deleting the post and starting again, which threw away every like, comment and share the post had earned, along with whatever ranking signal came with them. Replace Audio keeps all of it. The post stays exactly where it is and only the soundtrack changes.

Why this matters for your business: this removes a real and annoying cost. Most South African businesses posting to Instagram have at some point published with the wrong track, or watched a track go silent weeks later when the rights lapsed. That used to be a choice between leaving a muted post up or binning something that was performing well. Now it is an edit. Go back through the last few months, find anything muted or mismatched that still gets engagement, and repair it rather than replacing it.

Handle editing is now live on Google Search profiles

We told you at the start of August that handle swapping was coming to Search profiles. It has now shipped. Open your Search profile, choose Edit profile, then click Edit next to your handle and pick from the accounts already linked.

Why this matters for your business: Google dropped the Search profile follower threshold to 35,000 earlier this month, which brought a lot more South African businesses into range. The handle is the part searchers actually see. If yours is still pulling from an account you no longer lead with, this is a five minute fix.

Content and websites

WordPress 7.1 ships today at WordCamp US

We have been flagging this date for a fortnight, so here is what actually landed. Responsive styling lets you set different block styles for tablet and phone visually, with no CSS, and interactive state styling covers hover and focus the same way. Media processing moves into the browser, with HEIC, UltraHDR, AVIF and WebP support, GIF to video conversion, and uploads that resume after a dropped connection. There are also new Tabs and Playlist blocks, a proper media editor, notes on selected text with mentions, and an admin toolbar that stays put while you scroll.

Why this matters for your business: do not update the live site today. The post editor now runs iframed on every theme, and that is exactly where older blocks and page builders break. Take a staging copy, update that, then open your three most complicated page templates and test every form. The change most likely to save you money is media processing in the browser, because iPhone photos in HEIC no longer need converting before upload and large images stop hammering your server. If your host has been charging you separately for image optimisation, that is now a conversation worth having.

ChatGPT ads are swapping advertisers mid load

Ads inside ChatGPT have been seen loading one advertiser, blinking, and then showing a completely different one. Reported on 17 August, with nothing yet from OpenAI. It reads as an ad server fault.

Why this matters for your business: ChatGPT ads bill on impressions. If an ad renders and is replaced before anybody reads it, the advertiser paid for something nobody saw. If you are testing this channel, set your impression numbers against whatever click data you have. A high impression count next to almost no engagement is worth questioning. Keep the spend small until OpenAI explains itself.

Monday’s Merchant Center change rewrites six weeks of history

We covered this change on 12 August. The detail worth knowing now is the backdating, which nobody mentioned at the time. When Google updates the Merchant Center performance report definitions on Monday 24 August, it also restates historical data all the way back to 1 July 2026.

YouTube affiliate results split out of Organic into their own traffic value, which will show up as a one time drop in organic traffic. Google is also aligning its YouTube organic click and impression definitions with YouTube’s own standards, widening product level reporting for Google Ads across all channels, and adding new segmentation options.

Why this matters for your dealership: vehicle ads run off Merchant Center feeds, so this is your reporting. Six weeks of Q3 numbers will not match after Monday. Export everything you have before the switch and keep the file somewhere safe. Then when organic traffic appears to fall next week, you can put the before and after side by side rather than explaining a definition change from memory to a sceptical dealer principal. Nothing about your feed or your listings needs to change. Only the measurement does.

What to do this week

  • Export your Merchant Center performance data before Monday 24 August
  • Compare Search Console figures either side of 18 August and note any spam update movement
  • Update to WordPress 7.1 on staging first, then test your page templates and forms
  • Check older Instagram posts for muted or mismatched audio and repair rather than delete
  • Set the correct handle on your Google Search profile
