Google switches off Google Assistant from 4 September, and once it goes on a device there is no way to bring it back. Gemini takes over. Every Android phone, every Wear OS watch, every pair of earbuds and every car running Android Auto from a phone loses the assistant your customers have been talking to since 2016. Here is what that means for you, along with the rest of this week’s news.

Assistant goes away on 4 September and Gemini replaces it
Google confirmed the date this week. The rollout starts on 4 September and may take a few weeks to reach everyone. It covers Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and earbuds, and Android Auto when a phone projects it. Once Gemini lands on a device the switch is permanent. Not everything survived the move either. Interpreter Mode, which handled live spoken translation across 26 languages, was pulled earlier this year and Gemini still does not replace it.
The difference matters more than the branding suggests. Assistant matched short spoken commands against a fixed set of actions. Gemini reasons over the question and answers in its own words, so a spoken query about your business now runs through a generative model rather than a lookup.
Why this matters for your business: voice queries are almost always local and almost always urgent. Someone asking for a plumber, a pharmacy or your trading hours is asking a model that reads your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your website copy, then paraphrases. Check that your hours, phone number and service list are current and written in plain sentences a model can quote. Vague copy a person could interpret is copy a model skips.
Google says Reddit gets no special treatment
Google’s Jennifer Kutz told The Verge on 4 August that Reddit “gets no special preference” in search rankings, and that Google’s AI features do not set out to show content from any particular platform. She added that forums carry both high and low quality content, and that Google’s systems are built to tell the difference. The statement lands while Reddit’s own numbers wobble. United States daily users slipped to 53.2 million from 53.5 million last quarter, even as international users climbed to 77.1 million.
Why this matters for your business: plenty of South African marketers spent the past two years seeding Reddit threads because Reddit kept appearing at the top of results. Google is now saying out loud that the platform earns those positions the same way anyone does. Treat Reddit as one place your customers talk, not as a ranking shortcut, and put the effort back into pages you own.
Bing is testing a Top Source block
Microsoft is trialling a Top Source block that pulls several articles from one website into a single highlighted slot. Sachin Patel spotted it this week. Microsoft has not said how a site earns it, so nobody can optimise for it yet. Bing is small here but it feeds Copilot, and the block rewards depth on a topic.
Ads and publishers
The AdSense Related Search format disappears today
From today, 6 August, the Related Search format inside AdSense Auto ads stops appearing on publisher sites, and Google has removed it as an option in the AdSense interface. Publishers do not have to do anything. Remaining Auto ad formats keep running and some will fill the empty slots.
Why this matters for your business: if you run display advertising on a content site, expect the shape of your revenue to shift this month rather than the total. Check your AdSense reporting on Monday and compare format by format, not just the headline number.
Your Google Ads cost per conversion moves on 17 August
Google changes how target based bidding behaves on 17 August across Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Travel campaigns. Until now a campaign that could beat your target simply beat it. After the change, campaigns deliver closer to the target you set. Google’s own example is blunt. Set a target cost per acquisition of R100 while actually delivering at R50, and the campaign starts moving toward R100.
Why this matters for your business: almost everyone sets targets loosely, as a ceiling they never expect to hit. Those loose numbers become real spending in eleven days. Open every campaign this week, write down what you actually pay per lead or sale, and reset the target near that figure rather than the comfortable round number you typed a year ago.
Social and content
LinkedIn is testing private AI labels on posts and comments
LinkedIn has started testing a way for members to privately flag a post or comment as written by artificial intelligence. The flag stays hidden from other readers and goes to LinkedIn instead.
Why this matters for your business: readers already spot generated copy, and now they have a button for it. The tell is rarely the grammar. It is the absence of anything specific, so a post that could have been written by anyone in your industry reads as machine written whether or not it is. Put one real number or one client situation into every post and the problem mostly solves itself.
Automotive
Android Auto loses Assistant, but dashboard systems keep it
The Assistant shutdown splits the car market in two. When a driver plugs in a phone and projects Android Auto onto the screen, Assistant goes away on 4 September like everywhere else. Cars running Google’s own system inside the dashboard keep Assistant past that date while Gemini reaches them separately. From next month two drivers in the same showroom get answers from two different systems depending on how their car is wired.
That matters because the car is where voice search actually gets used. A driver asking which dealer has a model in stock, or where to book a service, asks without looking at a screen. Gemini answers from your Business Profile and your website first.
Why this matters for your dealership: start with the boring data. Every branch needs its own Business Profile with correct hours, the right phone number and the service department listed separately where that applies. Then look at site speed. Fewer than one percent of the retail sites run by North America’s fifty largest dealer groups pass Google’s Core Web Vitals, and the 2025 Digital Automotive Shopping Pulse report put the cost of that at roughly thirty rand in every hundred of advertising spend. A vehicle detail page that takes six seconds to load loses the enquiry long before any model quotes you.
What to do this week
- Reset your Google Ads targets to reflect what you actually pay per conversion, before 17 August.
- Read your Google Business Profile out loud and fix anything a voice assistant could not quote cleanly.
- Warn your team that Assistant disappears from their phones and watches from 4 September, with no way back.
- Compare your AdSense revenue format by format next week rather than in total.
- Run one vehicle detail page or product page through PageSpeed Insights and write down the number.
