Search and Social Update: 3 August 2026

Orange map pin outline with radar arcs on dark green, for the Google local inventory ads change

Google has set a date and taken away the off switch. From 31 August every Shopping campaign in your Google Ads account serves local inventory ads by default. If you turned local serving off, it comes back on. If your developer writes code that tries to disable it through newer versions of the Ads API, that code now fails outright.

Local inventory ads switch on for every Shopping campaign on 31 August

Google confirmed the change on 28 July through its Ads Developer Blog. The field that controls local serving stops doing anything and is forced on across the board. Any campaign with a linked local product feed starts showing shop stock alongside your online products. Management moves to the inventory filter, where you choose local, online or both. Performance Max for retail already works this way.

Why this matters for your business: if you have a physical shop and a working feed, this is extra reach you were not paying for. If you sell online only, nothing much changes. The risk sits with everyone in between, running a local feed nobody has looked at since it was set up. From 31 August Google advertises stock levels and prices you may not have checked in a year. Reconcile that feed against what is actually on the shelf this month, then watch the first fortnight of September carefully. Budget gets reallocated, not increased, so a weak local channel quietly takes money from the online one.

Google dropped its rule about internal search pages, but keep blocking them

On the latest Search Off the Record podcast, John Mueller confirmed that the old instruction to block Google from crawling your site’s internal search results pages is no longer in Google Search Essentials. It sat in the original Webmaster Guidelines as an example of automatically generated content. It has gone. Mueller then spent several minutes explaining why you should carry on blocking them anyway.

There are two reasons. Crawling an endless set of search URLs burns server capacity and slows how quickly Google works through the rest of your site. The bigger one is abuse. If anyone can search your site for anything and that results page can be indexed, spammers will feed it casino, pharmaceutical and adult terms with phone numbers attached. Your site then starts ranking for those queries, and Google may flag it as hacked in Search Console.

Why this matters for your business: there is nothing to change if you already block your search parameter in robots.txt or noindex the search template, which most decent WordPress themes handle. If you are not certain, run a Google search for site:yourdomain.co.za inurl:?s= and look at what comes back. Dropping the rule is not permission. It is Google saying the mistake hurts you rather than offends them.

YouTube Shorts finally gets custom thumbnails

YouTube chief Neal Mohan announced on 24 July that custom thumbnails are rolling out to every creator in the YouTube Partner Programme for Shorts. You upload your own or pick one of three suggested frames. In the same run of changes the Shorts dislike button becomes a heart, playback gains a double speed option, and a clear screen mode arrives.

Why this matters for your business: Shorts thumbnails do not appear in the Shorts feed itself. They appear on your channel page, in search results and in suggested video panels, which is exactly where somebody browsing decides whether you are worth their time. Go back through your best performers and give them proper thumbnails. It costs nothing and improves the surface where most people judge a channel.

Meta AI moves inside Threads conversations

Meta is testing Meta AI inside Threads, so anyone can tag it in a public post or reply and get an answer in the thread itself. The test started in Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

Why this matters for your business: South Africa is not in the first wave, so this is a watch item. An AI answering inside a public reply is a new place for your brand to be described, accurately or otherwise, in a conversation you are not part of. The discipline that helps you in AI Overviews helps here too.

Content and AI

ChatGPT tests ads that open a chat instead of a website

OpenAI is testing a campaign type in the ChatGPT ads manager called Agent. Instead of sending the click to your website, the ad opens a conversation with a business agent built around you. OpenAI scrapes your site to build a business profile, works out the questions customers usually ask, and lets you attach product feeds, tool access and lead capture forms. Analyst Juozas Kaziukenas spotted it live for selected advertisers at the end of July.

Why this matters for your business: this changes what a website is for. Today it is a destination. In this model it becomes the training material for something that speaks on your behalf, on a surface you do not own. Google announced business agents for shopping ads earlier this year, so this is a direction rather than an experiment. Write down your honest answers to the twenty questions customers actually ask, publish them as real page content rather than script inside a chat widget, and keep pricing and stock information accurate and readable by a machine.

Dealers are already inside the business agent test

Automotive is one of the named verticals testing Google’s Business Agent for Leads format, and OpenAI’s Agent campaign points the same way. For a dealer that means an enquiry can start and finish inside a chat, using whatever a model believes about your stock.

Pied Piper’s 2026 internet lead study put numbers to the risk. When ChatGPT was asked, as a local buyer, about a specific vehicle known to be on the forecourt, the nearest stocking dealership was not mentioned at all in nine percent of cases. It confirmed the vehicle was in stock seventy percent of the time, confirmed test drive availability only thirty six percent of the time, and linked to the exact vehicle in just thirty percent.

Why this matters for your dealership: a well stocked dealer can be invisible to a buyer standing two kilometres away. Three fixes, in order. Make sure every vehicle page states stock status, location and price as text on the page and not only inside a JavaScript widget. Add plain test drive booking wording to those pages, because a model cannot confirm what your site never says. And clear sold stock off the live site quickly, because a model reading a sold car as available gives a confident wrong answer.

What to do this week

  • Reconcile your local product feed against actual shelf stock before 31 August.
  • Check what Google has indexed from your site’s own search box, and block anything unexpected.
  • Add custom thumbnails to your best performing YouTube Shorts.
  • Write down the twenty questions customers really ask, and publish the answers.
  • Dealers, confirm that stock status, price and test drive wording appear as text on every vehicle page.

If you would rather someone else worked through that list, or you want your product feed checked before 31 August, get in touch.
