There used to be a small button underneath Google’s AI answer that said Show more. On a growing number of searches it has gone. The full AI answer now loads on its own, the follow up question box loads with it, and everything you rank for slides down the page.
Google has confirmed the change. Three more stories follow, and one of them lands tomorrow morning whether you act on it or not.
SEO and search
Google confirmed the AI answer now fills the page by default
Google told Search Engine Land on 28 August that AI Overviews can now dynamically expand into a full answer for some queries. The Show more button disappears, the Ask anything box loads straight away, and the ordinary blue links get pushed down. Google’s wording was that AI Overviews “may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people”, and that its research shows people go deeper into follow up questions this way.
Chris Long spotted it running in the wild on 27 August and described it as Google revealing the AI Mode prompt box by default. Google would not say how many queries this affects.
Why this matters for your business: There is nothing to opt out of here, so stop judging your search performance on rankings alone. A page at position three is worth far less on a query where the AI answer fills the first screen. In Search Console, find the queries where click-through rate has fallen over the past three months while average position stayed flat. The AI answer has taken those. Shift your effort to the queries where people still click, which almost always carry buying intent or a local element.
The August spam update pushed one in six top ten pages past position 100
We covered the August 2026 spam update as it rolled out, and again when the volatility carried on. Now there is a number attached to it. SE Ranking studied 100,000 keywords across 20 industries, comparing rankings on 17 and 22 August against a quiet stretch in late July. During the update 16.71 percent of pages that had been sitting in the top ten fell past position 100 for the same keyword. In the July window that figure was 9.2 percent. That is an 82 percent increase, and it made a top ten page roughly 1.8 times more likely to vanish from the first hundred results entirely.
Why this matters for your business: This was not ordinary churn. If your rankings moved in the third week of August, the update explains it better than anything you changed. A page that dropped past 100 rather than slipping a few places means Google made a judgement about the page itself. Compare your Search Console data for 10 to 17 August with 22 to 29 August, page by page. Anything that went from steady clicks to nothing needs reading against Google’s spam policies, especially thin pages and old pages you stopped maintaining.

Instagram will now cut your first Reel for you
Instagram launched First Draft on 25 August. You select several clips, tap once, and Instagram trims the pauses and the dead air and assembles a rough cut in under ten seconds. Every decision it makes is reversible, so you can reorder clips, trim them again or throw the whole thing away before you publish. It is rolling out on iPhone first. No Android date has been announced.
Why this matters for your business: The reason most small South African businesses post no video is not strategy. It is that editing eats an hour nobody has. This removes the excuse for the roughest part of that job. Film three or four short clips during a normal working day, a delivery going out, a product being made, a customer collecting something, then let First Draft assemble them. It will beat the Reel you never made.

WP Rocket leaked API keys, and updating the plugin is not enough
WP Rocket, one of the most widely installed caching plugins on WordPress, warned customers on 28 August that a flaw could have exposed account email addresses, licence keys, and any Cloudflare or Sucuri API keys stored in the plugin. It learned about the problem overnight on 26 August and shipped a fix the next day. The version to be on is 3.23.3.3.
Updating alone does not close this. If you ever pasted a Cloudflare or Sucuri API key into WP Rocket, treat it as exposed and replace it.
Why this matters for your business: A Cloudflare API key is not a small thing to lose. Depending on how it was scoped it can change DNS records, which means somebody could point your domain wherever they liked. Do three things this morning. Update WP Rocket if it is below 3.23.3.3. Roll any Cloudflare or Sucuri keys you stored in it. Then check whether the key you were using is a global API key rather than a scoped token, because a scoped token limits the damage.

Google starts moving Search campaigns to AI Max tomorrow
This is real news rather than a read-across, and it updates something we flagged on 2 August. Google’s automatic migration of eligible Search campaigns to AI Max runs from 1 to 30 September 2026, so it starts tomorrow. Campaigns using automatically created assets or campaign level broad match get moved with no opt-in and no way out. From September you also cannot create a new Dynamic Search Ads campaign in Google Ads, in Editor or through the API. Existing ones do not migrate until February 2027.
Why this matters for your dealership: Dynamic Search Ads are how most dealer accounts get shoppers onto the right vehicle detail page without a keyword list for every model, variant and year. AI Max replaces that with broader matching and its own generated creative, and it will happily send somebody searching for one specific 2023 model to a page you did not choose. Before tomorrow, check which campaigns run automatically created assets or campaign level broad match, because those move first. Add your finance page, your trade-in page and any sold stock to your negative lists. Then compare cost per lead against August in the second week of September. A wasted click on a model keyword costs a dealer far more than it costs a plumber.
What to do this week
- Update WP Rocket to 3.23.3.3, then roll any Cloudflare or Sucuri API keys you saved inside it.
- Check today whether any Google Ads campaign uses automatically created assets or campaign level broad match. The AI Max migration starts tomorrow.
- Compare click-through rate against average position for your top Search Console queries, and mark the ones the AI answer has taken.
- If you submit URLs to Bing programmatically, the old Bing Webmaster Tools SOAP and POX APIs retire today. The REST endpoints do the same job with the same key.
- Film three short clips on your phone this week and let Instagram First Draft cut them.
If you would rather somebody else watched all of this and told you only the parts that touch your business, that is our job. Get in touch.
