Google Wobbles, AI Rewrites the Results Page: What SA Businesses Need to Know This Week

If your website traffic looked a little strange over the past week, you are not imagining it. Rank trackers across the industry lit up over the weekend of 18 and 19 July as Google search results shifted sharply, and Google has confirmed nothing. At the same time, Google is quietly rebuilding the results page itself around AI answers, and it has finally started showing website owners how often they appear in those AI features. Here is what actually happened this week, and what it means for your business here in South Africa.

SEO and search

Rankings shook over the weekend, and Google is saying nothing

Fourteen independent tracking tools recorded heavy ranking volatility on 18 and 19 July, following an earlier unconfirmed spike around 11 July. There has been no confirmed core update since May, and the last confirmed change was a routine spam update at the end of June. Analysis of recent volatility shows thin affiliate pages and “middleman” content losing the most ground, while pages with original information held steady.

Why this matters for your business: if your rankings dipped this week, do not panic and start rewriting pages. Unconfirmed volatility often settles within days. Check Google Search Console first, note which pages moved, and wait at least a week before making changes. The pattern is consistent: sites with original, first-hand content recover; thin content does not. That is where your effort should go.

You can now measure your AI search visibility

Google’s new generative AI performance reports in Search Console are rolling out, giving dedicated visibility data for AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI-powered Discover, showing impressions by page, country and device. Meanwhile, AI Overviews keep growing: they now include Top Stories news carousels, and an updated study found organic clicks drop by roughly 40 percent on searches where an AI Overview appears.

Why this matters for your business: nearly half of searches now trigger an AI answer, and for the first time you can measure whether your website appears inside them. Once the report reaches your Search Console account, check it monthly. If AI Overviews are answering your customers’ questions without a click, your website needs to earn the visit in other ways: pricing, case studies, tools and local expertise that a summary cannot replace.

Social media

Instagram opens up: photo comments, reposts and Google search data

Instagram now lets users reply to posts and Reels with photos in the comments, and its upgraded repost feature gives every profile a dedicated “Reposted” tab. Separately, Google’s new “platform properties” feature lets you verify your Instagram account in Search Console and see how your Instagram content performs in Google search, including clicks and impressions.

Why this matters for your business: reposts give your best content a second life through your customers’ profiles, so make shareable posts a deliberate part of your content plan. And if Instagram is a serious channel for you, verify it in Search Console. Your posts now show up in Google results, and for the first time you can see which ones bring people to you.

TikTok builds AI into the editor while LinkedIn goes collaborative

TikTok has added AI video generation directly inside its editor timeline, plus background noise removal for live video and audio messages in DMs. LinkedIn is rolling out collaborative posts that let multiple contributors publish together, and is testing brand guidelines that constrain its AI writing tools to your company’s tone of voice.

Why this matters for your business: TikTok’s built-in AI tools lower the cost of producing video, but use them for drafts and effects, not to replace real footage of your team and products, because audiences are increasingly wary of obviously AI-made content. On LinkedIn, collaborative posts are a practical way for a small firm to piggyback on partners’ and staff members’ networks: one post, several audiences.

Content and AI

Audiences are cooling on AI-made content

New creator economy research shows consumer enthusiasm for AI-generated creator content has fallen from 60 percent to 26 percent, while the share of people who see AI as a negative force in the space has nearly doubled since 2023. The same research shows successful creators shifting from chasing views to building owned audiences through newsletters, communities and their own websites.

Why this matters for your business: the lesson applies to brands too. Use AI to speed up research, planning and first drafts, but keep the finished product recognisably human and local. And invest in channels you own: an email list of your customers is worth more than followers on a platform whose algorithm changed twice this month.

The AI tool race sped up again

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on 24 July, a significant upgrade aimed at long-running work and professional tasks, with OpenAI widely rumoured to be preparing its own major release within days.

Why this matters for your business: the practical capability of these tools keeps jumping every few months. If you tried AI for marketing tasks a year ago and found it lacking, it is worth another look. The businesses getting value are the ones treating AI as a skilled assistant with a clear brief, not a magic button.

What to do this week

  • Check Google Search Console for ranking movement from 18 and 19 July, but hold off on changes until things settle.
  • Look for the new generative AI performance report in Search Console and note your AI Overview impressions.
  • Verify your Instagram account in Search Console if social is a meaningful channel for you.
  • Plan one genuinely shareable Instagram post to take advantage of the repost tab.
  • Audit one piece of thin or generic content on your site and rewrite it with first-hand detail.
