If it feels like fewer people are clicking through to your website from Google, you are not imagining it. Google’s AI Overviews – the AI-written answers at the top of the results page – now appear on almost half of all searches, and this week Google switched on news carousels inside them, with AI-generated images on the way. Search is quietly becoming a place where people get answers without ever visiting a website, and that changes how your business needs to show up.
Here is what moved in search, social media and content over the past few days, and what each change means for your business in practical terms.
SEO & Search
AI Overviews now show news carousels, and will soon generate images
Google has rolled out Top Stories carousels inside AI Overviews, now fully live for mobile users in the United States and expanding from there. Days earlier, it announced AI image generation inside AI Overviews along with a redesigned Google Images. Independent tracking puts AI Overviews on roughly 48% of queries, and organic click-through rates drop by 34% to 61% when one appears. Google’s head of Search, Nick Fox, pushed back on criticism this week, saying AI Mode and AI Overviews send billions of clicks to websites every week.
Why this matters for your business: Ranking first no longer guarantees traffic. The new goal is being cited inside the AI answer itself, which rewards pages that answer real customer questions clearly and directly, with proper structure and a recognisable brand. Review which of your pages have lost clicks while keeping impressions, and rework your most important pages to answer questions plainly near the top.
Signs of another Google ranking shake-up this past weekend
Tracking tools picked up significant ranking volatility around 18 and 19 July, pointing to another unconfirmed Google update. It follows the confirmed June spam update and a smaller unconfirmed wobble around 11 July, in a year defined by near-constant movement tied to Google’s AI features.
Why this matters for your business: If your rankings moved over the weekend, do not panic and do not make hasty changes. Unconfirmed updates often partially reverse as they settle. Note what moved and when, wait a week or two, and only then act on a clear pattern. If a drop persists, the cause is more likely content quality or AI Overview displacement than a penalty.
Search Console can now track your social profiles in Google Search
Google Search Console’s new platform properties let you connect your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube accounts and see how that content performs in Google Search, alongside your website. Google has also expanded access to its new AI performance reports, which show how your site appears inside AI features.
Why this matters for your business: Your social posts are now measurable search assets. For many local businesses, an Instagram profile or YouTube video ranks for searches the website never will. Connect your accounts, see what Google already surfaces, and let that guide what you post next.
Two dates for online shops: 18 and 31 August
Google’s Content API for Shopping is being retired in favour of the new Merchant API by 18 August, with an extension request form available for those who need more time. Separately, Local Inventory Ads will be switched on by default for all Shopping campaigns from 31 August. Shopify store owners should not uninstall and reinstall the Google & YouTube app during the transition – Google says it will handle the migration automatically, and reinstalling can currently cause issues.
Why this matters for your business: If you sell online, confirm with whoever manages your product feeds that the Merchant API migration is sorted before 18 August. And if you run Shopping campaigns with a physical store, check your settings before 31 August so Local Inventory Ads switching on by default does not quietly reshape where your budget goes.
Social
LinkedIn now lets you co-author posts
LinkedIn announced a new Add Collaborators option that lets you invite others to partner on a post, with every collaborator listed at the top. It is designed for product launches, business announcements, brand partnerships and team milestones.
Why this matters for your business: A co-authored post reaches both networks at once, which is a rare free reach multiplier on LinkedIn. Plan your next announcement as a collaboration with a business partner, supplier or senior staff member rather than posting from the company page alone.
Ads arrive on Threads for everyone
Meta is rolling out ads on Threads to all users globally, alongside a new Your Algo setting that lets users tell the feed what they want to see. Threads has also tightened its integration with Facebook, including sharing posts to Facebook Stories.
Why this matters for your business: New ad inventory is usually cheapest before the crowd arrives, so a small Threads test through Meta Ads Manager could deliver unusually cheap reach for a few months. The flip side of user-controlled feeds is that dull content gets filtered out faster, so organic posts need to earn their place.
Content
Instagram’s Partnership Ads API gives creator content a paid boost
Instagram launched a Partnership Ads API that lets brands run paid media using creator content directly from the creator’s own handle, with full attribution and performance tracking. Early results show 30% to 40% higher engagement than the same content run from a brand handle.
Why this matters for your business: You do not need celebrity budgets for this. A trusted local creator talking about your product, amplified with even modest ad spend from their handle, will typically outperform a polished ad from your own page. Start with one creator whose audience matches your customers.
AI assistants lean on YouTube more than any other source
New research shows YouTube now appears in about 16% of answers across major AI platforms – more than Reddit at 10% and more than Google.com itself at under 8%. As more customers ask ChatGPT and Gemini for recommendations, video has become a visibility channel for AI answers, not just for viewers.
Why this matters for your business: A simple, well-titled YouTube video answering a common customer question can now surface your business inside AI-generated answers. You do not need production polish; you need clear titles, accurate descriptions and answers to the questions your customers actually ask.
What to do this week
- Check Search Console for pages that kept impressions but lost clicks – a sign AI Overviews are absorbing your traffic.
- Connect your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube accounts as platform properties in Search Console.
- If you sell online, diarise 18 August (Merchant API) and 31 August (Local Inventory Ads default) and confirm your migration plan.
- Plan one co-authored LinkedIn post with a partner, supplier or team member.
- Identify one local creator for a small Instagram partnership ads test.
- Publish or refresh one short YouTube video answering your most common customer question.
Keeping up with all of this is a full-time job – ours, as it happens. If you would like help turning any of these changes into an advantage for your business, get in touch with the Maple Leaf team for a no-obligation chat.
