Somebody phones your business at half past two on a Tuesday. Nobody picks up. From 1 October, Google will bill you for that call anyway. Local Services Ads are changing how call leads get charged, and it lands hardest on small service businesses running lean on staff. That notice went out by email this week, alongside a measurement overhaul and a change to vehicle listings that closes a free door for dealers.

Google will charge you for calls nobody answered
Google emailed Local Services Ads advertisers this week with a short notice. On 1 October 2026 it updates how and when you get charged for call leads. Two things change. Missed calls during your listed business hours now count as valid, chargeable leads if the caller stays on the line longer than 20 seconds. A few exceptions apply, but the principle is clear. Nobody has to answer for you to pay. Second, if a first call does not qualify as a charged lead, any follow up call between you and that same person will be charged once it meets the valid lead criteria.
Why this matters for your business: Your business hours in Google are now a billing setting, not a display setting. If your listed hours run to five and your phone actually goes quiet at four, you are paying for the gap. Do three things before October. Trim your listed hours down to the times somebody genuinely answers. Set up call forwarding or a real answering service for the rest. Then pull your Local Services Ads call log and count how many calls already ring out unanswered, because that number is about to become an invoice.
Googlebot downloads your JSON, it does not read it
Gary Illyes from Google repeated a point on Monday that trips up a lot of developers. Googlebot, the crawler, does not parse JSON files. It downloads them and hands them on, and the indexer does the actual work of reading and understanding the content. The distinction sounds academic until you are debugging why a product feed or a structured data file is not producing anything in search.
Why this matters for your business: Crawling and indexing are two separate steps, and a file can sail through the first and fail the second. When your rich results vanish, checking that Google can reach the file is only half the job. Test the file itself in the Rich Results Test, because a malformed character or a broken escape will pass the download and die at the indexer, silently and with no warning in Search Console.

TikTok is pushing bulletin boards into the For You feed
TikTok has started promoting bulletin boards from brand and publisher profiles inside the For You feed. Bulletin boards launched as a one to many broadcast channel, the same idea as Instagram broadcast channels. A brand posts a short text, image or video update and it lands in the inbox of followers who joined that board. That was a closed loop. Only people already following you saw it. Surfacing those boards in the For You feed turns a private mailing list into a discovery surface.
Why this matters for your business: A broadcast channel you had no reason to build suddenly has an audience beyond your followers. If you already run a TikTok profile with a reasonable following, start a bulletin board and post to it two or three times a week with things that do not warrant a full video, like stock arriving, a price change or a quick answer to a question you keep getting. Keep it short and useful. The people who join a board are your warmest audience, and now strangers can find it too.
Websites and measurement
Google tag and Tag Manager become one thing
Google is folding its two tagging tools together. Every Google tag gets upgraded into a full Tag Manager container, so sites running only the basic tag pick up interface driven tagging, debugging and version control without installing anything new. Tag Manager itself gets a redesigned overview page and a new Settings section for container wide options, with triggers, variables, templates and folders moved into a collapsible Advanced section. The headline addition is no code event tracking. You can now define an event by clicking through the interface rather than writing a trigger by hand. Google also says the consolidation speeds up how data leaves the page.
Why this matters for your business: Most small business websites track a page view and nothing else, which means your Google Ads and Analytics have no idea which pages actually produce enquiries. This removes the excuse. Pick your three real conversions, usually a form submission, a phone number tap and a WhatsApp click, and set each one up as an event. Then mark them as conversions in Google Ads. Bidding cannot optimise toward something you never measured, and this is now a job you can do in an afternoon.

The free route to your inventory on Google has closed
This one has been happening in stages rather than overnight, so treat it as a situation rather than a headline. Google has wound down the free Vehicles for Sale experience that showed live stock inside a dealer Google Business Profile, and it has dropped support for vehicle listing structured data that powered it. Dealers have been reporting listings quietly disappearing for months with no clear explanation. Providers think the schema was doing a validation job behind the scenes, and removing it broke feed checks nobody adjusted. Running the other way, Google Vehicle Feeds on Search Ads has come out of beta, so your inventory can now run in Standard Shopping campaigns rather than only Performance Max.
Why this matters for your dealership: The free window into your stock is closing and the paid one is opening wider. That is not a coincidence and it is worth naming plainly. Two jobs follow. Check your Business Profile today and see whether your vehicles still appear, because most dealer groups have not looked. Then work out what that free traffic was worth before you decide what to spend replacing it. Your own vehicle detail pages matter more now than they did last year, so make sure each one carries a real price, honest mileage, several photographs and a working enquiry form.
What to do this week
- Trim your Local Services Ads business hours to the times somebody genuinely answers the phone, then sort out cover for the rest.
- Pull your call log and count the unanswered calls, so you know what October will cost you.
- Set up three real conversion events in Tag Manager and mark them as conversions in Google Ads.
- Check whether your vehicles still show on your Google Business Profile.
- If you run a TikTok profile, start a bulletin board and post something useful to it.
Most of these are small jobs that quietly protect your budget. If you would rather somebody else worked through them with you, get in touch with us and we will take a look at your account.
