The bar for making money on YouTube has just moved, and it moved by a factor of two. From 1 February 2027 a new channel needs 8,000 qualified watch hours in a year to join the YouTube Partner Programme, up from 4,000. Channels built on Shorts need 20 million views in 90 days rather than 10 million. If you already earn through the programme you keep your place. Everyone still climbing faces a new mountain.
Google also rewrote a Business Profile naming rule that catches many South African businesses, and Meta appears to be building a search engine out of your website.

Google now bans the same business name in two languages
Google added a new line to its guidelines for representing your business on Google. You may no longer repeat the same business name in multiple scripts or languages on your Business Profile. The examples Google gives are Japanese, but the rule applies anywhere businesses trade in more than one language, which describes most of South Africa.
The sharpest part is what Google removed as a defence. Until now a photo of your shopfront sign showing both versions of your name was often enough to justify a dual language listing. Google now says that is not acceptable even when the sign really does read that way. One name, one script.
Why this matters for your business: name breaches are one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended, and a suspension takes your map listing offline while you appeal. Open your Business Profile today and read the name field. If it carries a trading name followed by a translation, keep the version your customers actually search for and delete the rest. The second version still belongs on your website and your signage. Check every branch, not just the head office.
Meta is crawling the web to build its own index
Developer Pieter Levels published server logs on 6 August showing heavy crawling of his sites by Meta, and said Meta staff had confirmed privately that the company is building its own search engine. When Meta AI answers a question about current events it leans on someone else’s index today, and owning an index removes that dependency. Reports put the crawl at around eight months old. Meta has not confirmed any of it publicly, so treat this as strongly indicated rather than settled.
Why this matters for your business: a new crawler means new server load and a new place your content can surface without you knowing. Ask your host for a crawler breakdown from your access logs and see what share Meta’s bots take. On shared WordPress hosting a heavy crawler slows the site for real visitors, so rate limiting is worth a conversation. Then decide whether you want to be in that index, because if Meta AI starts answering the questions your customers ask, being absent is the expensive option.

YouTube doubles the watch hours needed to start earning
From 1 February 2027 new channels need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the past 365 days, or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days. Existing partners stay eligible even if they miss the new numbers. The fan funding tier that covers memberships and Super Chat is unchanged at 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours.
YouTube framed this as raising payouts rather than shutting people out, and added new earnings routes alongside it. Where an advertiser targets Shorts ads at five or fewer channels, those creators take 45 percent of that ad’s revenue on top of their usual Shorts pool earnings. Premium Lite also expands to every country where Premium is sold.
Why this matters for your business: you have about six months of the old threshold left, so if a channel is close, push now. For most South African businesses the ad revenue was never the point and this changes nothing about using YouTube to get found. It does change the influencer maths. Smaller creators may never reach the new bar, which makes them cheaper to partner with and more willing to take a brand deal.

AI labels reach the local pack and Discover
A month ago Google said it would label ads created or edited with AI, and those labels first showed up on ordinary search ads. They are now appearing on local pack listings and inside Google Discover, spotted by Anthony Higman and Damien Andell, with Discover sightings dating from 28 July. Google adds the disclosure automatically when you use its own generative tools. If you generate creative elsewhere and upload it, you declare it yourself, which makes that part an honour system.
Why this matters for your business: if you use Google’s asset generation, expect a badge. Nobody has good data yet on what the label does to click-through, so test rather than guess. Run one campaign on generated assets and one on your own photography and compare over a fortnight. Only the European Union, India and New York get the label printed on the face of the ad, so the effect here should be milder.

Two of today’s changes land hard on dealer groups
This is a read-across rather than automotive news. Nothing broke in the motor trade on Monday, but two of the day’s changes hit dealerships harder than most businesses.
Start with the naming rule. Dealer profiles carry some of the messiest names on Google Maps, stacking a franchise brand, a body style, a suburb and often a group name into one field. Add an Afrikaans version of the trading name and the listing now breaches the guideline. A group with fifteen rooftops has fifteen chances to get suspended, and a suspension pulls your service department out of the map pack along with the showroom.
Then the AI ad label. Dealers lean on Google’s generative asset tools because writing fresh copy for every model and variant by hand is not realistic when stock turns weekly. Local pack ads are exactly where the label is now showing, beside your dealership name at the moment a buyer picks where to go.
Why this matters for your dealership: audit every rooftop’s profile name this week and settle on one script and one format across the group, carrying the franchise brand and the suburb but nothing translated. The name should match the one on the building, so agree the wording with the principal first. On the ads side, keep generated copy for model and variant text where speed matters, and use your own photography and written copy on used stock campaigns, because that is where trust does the most work.
What to do this week
- Check every Business Profile name for a second language or script version and remove it.
- Ask your host for a crawler report and see how much bandwidth Meta’s bots are taking.
- If a YouTube channel is near 4,000 watch hours, push to cross it before February 2027.
- WordPress 7.1 RC2 lands today ahead of the 19 August release, so test on a staging copy.
