If your website’s Google traffic has looked softer this month, you are not imagining it and this week we learnt a little more about why. Google has switched on news carousels inside AI Overviews for all mobile users in the United States, which means searchers now get headlines, summaries and images without ever visiting the websites that produced them. It is the clearest signal yet of where search is heading: answers on Google’s page, not yours. The good news is that Google is finally giving businesses the tools to measure what is happening. Here is what moved in search, social and content this week, and what it means for your business here in South Africa.
SEO & Search
Google puts Top Stories inside AI Overviews
As of 17 July, Google confirmed that a Top Stories news carousel is fully live inside AI Overviews for mobile users in the United States, alongside AI-generated images and new citation displays. AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of searches, and independent trackers report organic click-through drops of between 34% and 61% when one is present. The rollout is US-first, but Google features of this kind almost always reach South African results within months.
Why this matters for your business: Fewer clicks does not have to mean fewer customers it means each click that does happen carries more intent. Shift your content towards things an AI summary cannot fully answer: your pricing, your local availability, your case studies and proof. Being cited inside the overview is the new position one, so keep your business information consistent and your key pages genuinely authoritative.
Search Console’s AI performance report reaches more sites
The generative AI performance report that Google launched in Search Console in early June initially limited to the UK is now appearing for sites in the United States, India, Switzerland and beyond. It separates AI Overview and AI Mode impressions from standard organic data for the first time. Google is also preparing a toggle that lets site owners block their content from AI search features entirely.
Why this matters for your business: Open Search Console this week and look for the new AI performance report if it has reached your property, you finally have real data on how visible you are inside Google’s AI answers. Record a baseline now so you can see trends later. And think carefully before using the blocking toggle when it arrives: opting out of AI features means opting out of where a growing share of searches are answered.
A turbulent weekend in the rankings, with no official update
SEO tracking tools lit up over the weekend of 18–19 July, with fourteen named trackers registering unusual movement yet Google’s Search Status Dashboard shows no ranking incident, and the last confirmed change remains the June spam update that completed on 26 June. Some SEOs also report that movement from around 11 July reversed itself a week later.
Why this matters for your business: If your traffic dipped or jumped in the past week, do not rush to change anything. Unconfirmed volatility often settles or reverses. Note the dates, compare them against your analytics, and only act if a decline persists for several weeks panic edits during turbulence usually do more harm than good.
Social
Instagram hands users the algorithm
Instagram is rolling out “Your Algo” to all English-speaking users worldwide, letting people fine-tune their Reels feed by adding or removing topics. At the same time, the platform’s ranking now clearly favours watch time, saves and DM shares over likes.
Why this matters for your business: Your content now has to earn its place in a feed the user is actively curating. Make posts people want to save and send checklists, how-to guides, local tips and honest before-and-after work rather than chasing likes, which have become a vanity metric. If people save your post, Instagram will show it to more of them.
LinkedIn adds collaborative posts
LinkedIn has introduced an “Add Collaborators” option that lets several people co-author a single post, with every collaborator listed at the top. It is designed for product launches, partnership announcements and team milestones and a collaborative post reaches the networks of everyone attached to it.
Why this matters for your business: This is free distribution. Next time you launch something or land a partnership, co-publish the announcement with your business partner, a supplier or key staff members instead of posting from a single account. You multiply organic reach without spending a rand on promotion.
TikTok tightens the rules for live shopping
TikTok has banned non-real-time verbal interaction in shopping livestreams no AI-generated voices, no pre-recorded audio, no radio-style loops. Hosts must now engage viewers live, verbally or through sign language. The platform also added a “Viewer Wishes” engagement feature for TikTok Live.
Why this matters for your business: If live commerce is on your roadmap, budget for a real person who can present and respond in real time. The rule change rewards genuine interaction, which is exactly where a small business with a personable owner or staff member can beat larger, more automated competitors.
Content
Mid-tier creators command real money but measurement lags
New survey data shows creators with 50,000 to 500,000 followers now earn $50,000 to $100,000 a year on average, with brand partnerships driving 60–70% of that income. Yet around two-thirds of brands spending on influencer marketing still cannot measure whether it worked.
Why this matters for your business: You do not need celebrity budgets smaller local South African creators are affordable and often convert better. But never start a collaboration without measurement in place: a unique discount code, a tagged link and a dedicated landing page turn influencer spend from a hopeful expense into an accountable channel.
The shift from rented reach to owned audience accelerates
Across the creator and content world, the momentum is moving from chasing views on platforms you do not control towards newsletters, communities and websites that you own outright.
Why this matters for your business: Every story above AI answers keeping clicks on Google, users reprogramming their own feeds points the same way: the channels you rent are getting less predictable. Your website and your email list are the only audience assets you own. Every campaign you run should be feeding them.
What to do this week
- Open Google Search Console and check whether the new AI performance report has reached your site record your baseline impressions.
- Review your ten most-visited pages and ask: does each answer something an AI summary cannot pricing, local detail, proof of work?
- Publish one save-worthy Instagram post (a checklist, guide or local tip) and compare saves and shares against likes.
- Plan one LinkedIn collaborative post with a partner, supplier or team member for your next announcement.
- Add an email sign-up prompt to your most-visited page and start building the audience you own.
