Funding & Support for Going Digital in South Africa (SEDFA & More)

If you run a small South African business and you’ve been putting off a proper website because of the cost, it’s worth knowing what support is actually out there. Here’s an honest look — no inflated promises.

Is there a “website grant” in South Africa?

Not a single, simple voucher like some countries offer. But there is real government support for small businesses through SEDFA — the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency, which in October 2024 brought together the old SEDA, SEFA and CBDA into one body. SEDFA offers both finance and non-financial support: business development, training, mentorship, and help getting to market — which can include getting online.

Who can apply?

Criteria vary by programme, but typically you’ll need to be a South African-owned business, registered with CIPC, and tax compliant with SARS. There are programmes aimed at township and rural enterprises, women, youth and co-operatives. The single application route now lives at sedfa.org.za.

  • South African-owned and operated
  • Registered with CIPC
  • Tax compliant with SARS
  • A clear business proposal or plan

What it realistically covers

SEDFA leans more toward finance and broad business development than a fixed “build my website” cheque. So treat it as a route to support your wider growth — and budget for your website as an investment that should pay for itself in enquiries, rather than something you’re waiting on a grant to fund.
